 Our Summer Arts Intensive will be LIT with love, movement and creative inspiration! 

 

Two Arts Classes a Day for the Whole Week!

Please review the tracks under each week & all of the class descriptions to find the best combination for your child 

Each Student can choose their track(s) for the week, each Arts Track has 2 classes available for each age range. After you pay for your week(s)/ track(s) you will receive a confirmation email to complete your registration.

*Scholarships available, please inquire by emailing info@thepeoplesconservatory.org, no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

TPC Summer Arts Intensive Class Descriptions

 

Week 2: Movement Track (6-9yrs)

 

Afro-Haitian Dance with Tanzia 

(6-9 yrs)

With Haitian and West-African experience, this class will explore both high-energy and grounded movements while learning the history and culture of dances.

 

Mindful Graffiti and Break Dance with Safahri 

(6-9 yrs)

Get ready for a power hour full of fun hip-hop energy were visual graffiti artists and break dancers get to come together and create and learn new styles and create their own pieces! We will all warm-up together with stretching and dope empowering hip-hop music and then play some hip-hop games to connect with each other! Graffiti students will then get into their zones to create a new project learning how to combine mindful breathing and mindful emotions with graffiti writing and drawing while  breakers learn new moves/styles and create new dances/routines to their favorite songs!

 

 

Week 2: Visual Arts Track (6-9 yrs)

 

Character Design Drawing with Octavio

 (6-9 yrs)

Are you a fan of comics, manga, or graphic novels? Do you like to draw cartoon characters? Are you a beginner who wants to develop drawing skills? This class offers a focused study of line art technique with an emphasis on personal themes and styles. Students will explore the fundamentals of drawing for character design using traditional techniques in our study of line, shape, form and value. We’ll apply these elements in the study of anatomy learning about natural and exaggerated proportions of the head and body, exploring facial expressions, emotion, gesture, movement and perspective. Come ready to discuss your favorite fictional character(s) in all media i.e. cartoons, animated features, comics, comic strips, manga and graphic

Recycled Art with Octavio

(6-9 yrs)

This class will explore 3-D construction using items from the recycle bin! Materials may include bathroom tissue rolls, egg carton, cereal boxes, cardboard, aluminum foil, straws, paper and plastic cups and containers, etc. In addition you will also need scissors, glue, masking tape, duck tape, rubber bands, bamboo skewers, and anything else you may have in your wonderful crafting box collection! No worries if you don’t have some of these items, I’m certain you’ll find plenty of trash we can turn into art!

(6-9 yrs)

Urban arts | Graffiti Styles & Techniques with Mr Marcus. Learn Non-Traditional Art - Graffiti & Street Art influenced

 

 

Week 2: Literary Arts Track (10-14 yrs)

 

Songwriting with Raliegh

 (10-14 yrs)

Students must play an instrument and be willing to sing. Each class participants bring in music they like by others and their own music to share, have critiqued and work on. Students will analyze music from different genre and discuss what draws them to particular songs. Students will engage with one’s identity as an artist/leader/voice, presentation and feedback from peers, social commentary and sharing of experiences

Zine making with Nicky

(10-14 yrs)

A zine (/ziːn/ ZEEN; short for magazine) is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via photocopier. Zines are the product of either a single person or of a very small group, and are popularly photocopied into physical prints for circulation. Artist Scholars will learn the process of planning the flow and layout of their own zine, fabricate their own zine “dummy”, and create content through drawing, written word, collage, and other 2D mediums. Artist scholars will also contribute to a collaborative zine with their classmates and develop skills in idea sharing and concept development in a group/working as a team.

Empowered Women Writers with Asatu

(10-14 yrs)

Exploration of the social, historical, and contemporary contributions of dope women of color authors who have empowered generations through different forms of Literary art including novels, poetry, playwriting, songs, and rap.

 

 

Week 2: Visual Arts Track (10-14 yrs)

 

Cardboard Engineering with Octavio

(10-14 yrs)

This class will explore the art of engineering, using cardboard as a medium to study shape, form and structure. Students will learn and apply a variety of technical, mechanical and conceptual approaches in creating dynamic three dimensional sculpture.

Materials include: cardboard, utility knife, scissors, self healing cutting mat or any kind of cutting surface like a small sheet of masonite, plywood or multiple layers of cardboard glued together, masking tape, and hot glue guns and glue sticks.

Self-Love Visual Art with Marianna

(10-14 yrs)

This class will focus on the process of making art and self-expression rather than the product. Projects such as collaging, portraiture, writing, and creating a peace box will focus on social emotional learning, self-care, and positive self-identity development.

Materials. Notebook (to be decorated and become a journal). Magazines/photos etc. for collaging. Pen/Pencil. Regular Paper. Cardstock Paper. Paper for Oil Pastels. Oil Pastels. Acrylic paints and paint brushes. Colored Pencils and/or Markers/Sharpies. Scissors. Glue. Tape. 1 roll of colorful duct tape (any color). Cardboard box (e.g. shoe box). Other optional materials such as sequins, stickers, etc.

3-D Drawing with Amani

(10-14 yrs)

We will practice drawing using a horizon line to learn how to form 3-D shapes. We will then take that learning and draw a scene from a place we love/loved to visit.

 

 

Week 3: Music & Movement Arts Tracks (6-9 yrs)

 

Creative Drumming with Carlo

(6-9 yrs)

We will be exploring sounds and how music works, using everyday items from your household.

List of Materials: Can do a series of different classes with different instruments...1. Creating your own cajón: cardboard box, tape, scissors, a bowl...2. Shakers: rice, beans, several small containers (empty jars, or salt shakers, or tupper ware)...3. Spoons: 2 spoons (this one might be hard for 7-8 year olds but I think we can make it work!)...4. Pots and pans: different size pots and pans, at least 2.

 

Capoeira with Branch

(6-9 yrs)

Progression of movements, songs and instruments of Capoeira along with deeper study of history, language & music along with building their own instruments.

 

Piano with Raliegh

(6-9 yrs)

Basic piano technique, simple reading, chords, song analysis and Music theory. Jazz piano, Blues structure, soul/R&B music, Many different classes from beginner to advanced focus courses available. Such as The brilliance to Stevie Wonder, Understanding Steely Dan, Other Artist focus upon request. Materials: Piano

 

Week 3: Movement Arts Tracks (6-9 yrs)

 

Gymnastics with Beverley 

(6-9 yrs)

Students will learn mobility and gymnastic skills such as jumping, hopping, somersaults, and cartwheels. Students practice tumbling and play games to strengthen their gymnastic skills.

 

Yoga Play with Marianna

(6-9 yrs)

This yoga class will include playful asana practice (postures), affirming mantras, pranayama (breathing practice), dharana (concentration practice), and the spirit of karma yoga in a fun and developmentally appropriate way. Materials - Yoga mat (if possible). Blanket. Paper and crayons/markers/colored pencils. Stuffed animal. Yoga block (optional). Comfortable space to move in. Comfortable clothes to move in.

 

 

Week 3: Music & Movement Arts Tracks (10-14 yrs)

 

HIP-HOP Beat MakersProducers/Rap Class with Safarhi

(10-14 yrs)

Calling out the young rappers/emcees and beat makers/producers! To create their own album together this summer! Beat makers will learn how to collaborate with MC/ rappers  in this workshop using GarageBand or a beat making program they are used to , rappers will  write and freestyle new ideas and lyrics to combine with their new beats and experience their songs coming to life! We will focus on building rappers writing skills/delivery/confidence/knowledge of hip-hop/vocabulary/rhyme patterns etc.! And beat makers will dive into new sounds and learn how to create full songs with intro/drops/Altro‘s and how to navigate garage band or any other program They are using! All of this will turn into one big album! 

 

Student materials: notebook/pain/laptop or desktop/garage band app

Brown Girl Ballet with Rozz

(10-14 yrs)

Students will explore the fundamentals of ballet, barre exercises, floor technique, and combinations.

 

 

Week 3: Music & Movement Arts Tracks (10-14 yrs)

 

Skateboard Summer Sessions with Safahri (Tricks and Tips)

(10-14 yrs) 

Calling all skateboarders on all levels to join Safahri( skate coach) for this new skateboard summer class series to learn or return to having fun and getting focused on becoming one with your board ! Can this be done online ? (zoom)  Yes ! Skaters just need a board and a space outside to stand on it in front of a camera and they’re good to go ! They will work on how to Ollie or Ollie higher/  stand for tricks, kick flips, shove its, and so many more news tricks ! Also skate history, skate art, form their own skate team, skate language, watch skate video clips and build their own board! We might also do a social distant skate park visit with class if possible! See you soon skaters! 

Skateboard students needs: Skateboard/shoes that can get a little scratched up/water bottle/small towel/paper and markers​.

 

Breaking with Marcus

(10-14 yrs)

Breaking | Dynamic Movement To harness the individuals positive and negative energies and direct them towards an expression of creative movements aligned with musicality and rhythmic emotion."

 

Coding/Audio Production with Ranzel

(10-14 yrs)

Coding Music will demonstrate and teach a basic form of Computer Science called Syntax. In Audio Production we will learn about mixing and using different forms of structuring a song. We will also focus on focusing your mix around your kick and snare.
