Capoeira is the martial art disguised as a dance used by kidnapped Africans to gain their freedom during times of slavery. The purpose of this course is to introduce students to Capoeira’s culture through its history, music through its instruments, language through its songs and how this supports the capoeira roda.

Hip-Hop Emceeing with Safahri

We will dive into the depths of rhyming words and creating punchlines, flows, bars, lyrics, words within words, similes, metaphors, and creating hooks over new and old beats each class. Students will be encouraged to take a deep look at the history of poetry and rap from all over the world from the beginning of hip hop. Students will be asked to take influence from anything they have ever read, watched, heard, listened to, experienced, been moved by, overcome & been exposed to and break it down into a dope song during the semester. The final project will be of each individual student’s creation, adding to the legacy of the ever evolving hop hop universe.

Songwriting with Raliegh

Explore and learn the professional music industry language with the study of lyrics, melody, harmony and form to create songs. Simple computer tools will be used to aid in creating, hearing and notating your work. Everyone finishes the course completing one song documented with handwritten music notation of the song (lead sheet style) and a simple audio recording demonstrating the song.
